Housing Officer
Barnet and Kilburn
£23.07 per hour PAYE or £30.50 per hour umbrella
35 hours per week
Three-month temporary contract, with potential extension
We are recruiting a Housing Officer to take ownership of a housing patch across Barnet and Kilburn. This is a visible, resident-focused position where you will manage day-to-day housing matters, resolve problems and help ensure residents receive a responsive and dependable service.
You will build strong relationships with residents and understand the issues affecting their homes and communities. Taking ownership from the first point of contact through to resolution, you will work closely with internal teams, managing agents and contractors to improve services and maintain safe, well-managed places.
The role combines community-based work with office attendance. You will spend at least two days each week in communities, residents’ homes, estates or schemes, alongside at least two days working from an office. Depending on operational needs, home working may be possible for one day per week. Travel across the Barnet patch and to one scheme in Kilburn will be required.
Main responsibilities
- Act as a visible and approachable point of contact for residents.
- Respond to enquiries and keep residents informed about matters affecting their homes.
- Take ownership of repairs, cleaning, grounds maintenance and wider estate concerns.
- Investigate and resolve complaints, disputes and anti-social behaviour cases.
- Act promptly on repairs, fire risk assessment actions, safeguarding concerns and other safety matters.
- Complete estate inspections and help ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
- Set and manage service charges fairly and transparently, explaining costs clearly to residents.
- Work with repairs and planned maintenance teams to deliver improvements.
- Manage relationships with external contractors and managing agents, challenging performance and costs where appropriate.
- Organise or attend community events and resident forums.
- Maintain clear records and provide well-documented outcomes following investigations.
- Work towards service standards and key performance indicators while contributing to wider service improvements.
Candidate requirements
You will need sound customer service knowledge, preferably gained within housing, property management or another resident-focused environment. You must be comfortable handling sensitive concerns, balancing competing priorities and seeing difficult issues through to a clear outcome.
You will also need:
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Strong written communication and attention to detail.
- Tenacity, resilience and practical problem-solving ability.
- Effective investigative, influencing and negotiation skills.
- A strong analytical and customer-focused approach.
- Good IT skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- The ability to manage deadlines and maintain accurate records.
Previous housing experience is desirable. The role may also require a relevant professional qualification in the future, subject to legislative changes. Where applicable, there may be an expectation to work towards this qualification.
This is a good opportunity for someone who enjoys being visible in the community, taking responsibility and solving the practical issues that shape residents’ everyday experience.
