Rent & Service Charge Officer

Location: Southwark, London
Working pattern: Hybrid – 4 days in the office initially, reducing to 3 days from October
Salary:  £28.18–£29.48 per hour Umbrella DOE
Contract: Temporary, with potential to become permanent based on performance

We are currently recruiting for a Rent & Service Charge Officer to join the Finance team of a well-established resident-managed housing organisation in Southwark.

The organisation is Southwark’s largest resident-managed housing organisation, managing around 1,550–1,600 homes across the Borough and Bermondsey, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. It is a tenant-managed organisation working in partnership with Southwark Council, with resident directors playing an active role in strategic decision-making.

This is a great opportunity for someone with a finance, income management, rent accounting or service charge background who enjoys working with data and ensuring financial information is accurate and well maintained.

About the role

You will sit within the Finance team and be responsible for supporting the accurate management of rental income, tenant charges and service charge data.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Processing rent payments and other tenant charges.
  • Carrying out account and income reconciliations, ensuring financial records are accurate.
  • Maintaining accurate rent and financial transaction records.
  • Monitoring rent balances and arrears and preparing relevant reports.
  • Applying rent adjustments, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit payments correctly.
  • Supporting financial reporting and audit requirements.
  • Assisting with service charge calculations and the allocation of communal costs.
  • Supporting estimated and actual year-end service charge statements.
  • Supporting service charge billing processes.
  • Investigating discrepancies and resolving financial queries with internal teams.
  • Working closely with Finance, Housing and Service Charge colleagues.
  • Responding to queries around rent accounts and service charges.

Systems

Experience using Propman for service charges and/or ActiveH for rent would be advantageous, although this is not essential.

What we're looking for

We're particularly interested in candidates who have:

  • Previous experience within finance, income management, rent accounting or service charge accounting.
  • Experience processing financial transactions and carrying out reconciliations.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial data.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a strong focus on data accuracy.
  • The ability to identify discrepancies and irregularities within financial records.
  • Experience supporting financial reporting or audit processes.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise a busy workload effectively.
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to work collaboratively with Finance and Housing teams.

We're looking for someone who can take ownership of their workload, prioritise effectively and keep their manager informed of progress and any issues. You'll be joining a supportive team with a friendly and approachable manager.

What's on offer?

  • £38,637 – £40,404 per annum.
  • Hybrid working – 4 days in the Southwark office initially, reducing to 3 days from October.
  • 27 days annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing with service.
  • 2 Giveback Days per year.
  • Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Supportive and inclusive working environment.
  • Learning and development opportunities.
  • Potential for the temporary position to become permanent based on performance.

Interviews are being arranged this week, so we're keen to speak with suitable candidates as soon as possible.

If you're an experienced Finance, Rent, Income or Service Charge professional looking for your next opportunity in Southwark, please get in touch and send across your CV.
