Rent Officer Location: Kings Cross, hybrid working
Pay: £24.55 PAYE / £32.46 umbrella
Contract: 6 months with potential extension
Hours: 35 per week
A large London housing association is looking for an experienced Rent Officer to join its Rents Compliance and Operations team. This is an important role supporting accurate rent setting, compliant annual rent reviews and the smooth creation of rent accounts for new residents.
You will work with operational colleagues to ensure rent levels are calculated and applied correctly, regulatory and statutory requirements are followed, and residents can make payments from the beginning of their tenancy.
The role offers a good mix of technical rent work, complex data analysis, reporting and process improvement. It would suit someone who understands the affordable housing sector and can work confidently with large volumes of information while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Main responsibilities You will:
- Apply regulatory and statutory rent levels and annual rent reviews accurately, helping the organisation remain compliant with the economic rent standard.
- Ensure rent-related activity is delivered in line with relevant rent and lettings policies.
- Set up rent accounts and create barcodes so residents can make payments from the start of their tenancy.
- Provide administrative support for annual rent reviews, rent budgets and rent statements.
- Carry out cyclical data validation checks and identify coding errors, procedural weaknesses and compliance risks.
- Manage regulatory and non-regulatory rent-setting exceptions and exemptions in line with relevant policies and contracts.
- Support projects focused on improving or automating rent systems and processes.
- Use monitoring tools to test accuracy and confirm compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare high-quality reports and deliver presentations where required.
About you You must have experience and knowledge of the affordable housing sector, including the regulatory environment in which housing providers operate. This should include an understanding of the rent standard and relevant legislative principles.
You will also need:
- Excellent analytical skills and experience of working with complex data.
- Strong numerical ability, including experience of reviewing large volumes of data from multiple sources and testing it for accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Experience preparing and delivering reports for director-level audiences.
- Strong IT skills across Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio.
- The ability to use the Northgate housing system.
- Experience using monitoring tools to interpret information, report findings and verify compliance.
- An understanding of the legal and regulatory rules governing rent setting.
- Effective general Microsoft Office skills.
You should be comfortable working accurately within financial regulations, organisational policies and health and safety procedures. Integrity, sound judgement, commercial awareness and a commitment to providing a good service to internal and external customers will all be important.
This is a hybrid role based in Islington. Office attendance is expected on Monday and Wednesday, depending on business need, with three days working from home.
